IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
For the safety of all harbour users, and because of the environmental sensitivity of the harbour's important wild life habitats and species, there is a speed limit of a SLOW 10 knots in the harbour and there are restrictions on certain activities. There is access to Chichester Harbour under the Hayling road bridge for vessels of low air draught at certain states of the tide. There is a busy trade in sea dredged aggregates to two commercial wharves in the harbour. Some 500 ships of up to 80 metres length call each year with half a million tonnes of cargo. All vessels using the harbour, for whatever purpose, must pay harbour dues; this includes vessels visiting Southsea Marina. All vessels on the water must ensure that they display their daily or annual plaque. Water skiing is permitted (under license from the Langstone Harbour Board) in a designated Water Ski Zone. Water skiers must be members of the Langstone Harbour Water Skier's Association. The water ski area is not a go fast zone and only vessels actually towing a LHWSA skier are permitted to exceed the slow 10 knot harbour speed limit. Jet skis ( with a permit issued by Langstone Harbour Board) are permitted to launch from the public slipways at Ferry Point, Hayling Island and Eastney. They must observe the slow harbour speed limit of 10 knots whilst proceeding to sea before operating at high speed. Jet skies are not permitted to operate at speed in the "Run" at the harbour entrance between Hayling Island and Portsea Island. Speedboats and Powerboats must observe the slow harbour speed limit of 10 knots whilst proceeding to sea before operating at high speed. They are not to use the water ski area as a go fast zone. Sailing in yachts, day boats and dinghies is popular throughout the year and there is a busy marina in the south of the Harbour. Wind surfing is also a popular sport in the harbour and there are wind surfing events during the summer months. Diving in Langstone Harbour is subject to Byelaws 61 & 73. Print a diving request form from the link on this page. Contravention of Harbour byelaws may result in prosecution. |
